Finding Beta Readers

Looking for beta-readers is difficult, and its hard to know what you want. Here is some solid advice for anyone looking for good feedback on their work.

1.) What kind of feedback are you looking for?

If you are looking for feedback from a person as a reader, its best to find someone who does not write and just reads. They will read your book with a broad view of the bigger picture. However, if you are looking for feedback from a person as a writer, things might be different. A writer will notice things differently and have a much more pointed focus on specific details in your story.

2.) Develop a tough skin

Don’t ask someone to beta read your work and then get your feelings hurt or find yourself discouraged when they find mistakes or have an opinion you don’t like. I know that this book is your baby and you love it. But if you are looking for a beta reader, the goal should be finding mistakes and fixing them. Not validation. The validation comes afterwards, when you’ve truly perfected your work and can finally publish it for the world to see. Learn how to take constructive criticisms and use them to make yourself stronger, instead of focusing on the fact that you are imperfect (like literally every other writer out there). Obviously, not everything your beta readers say will be something you need to change. Just remember to keep yourself open to changing things.

3.) Ask your beta readers questions!

This article has some excellent questions to ask that help your beta reader tell you what you need to know in order to fix things:

Make sure you take notes on what they say!

4.) Interaction

Interact in social media or writing related groups. React to and comment on people’s posts. Develop relationships and meet people.

What are some tips on beta readers that have worked for you guys? How have beta readers helped you in the past?
